There’s just something about this room

I don’t know if I said enough about this room last time. It’s small, it’s cozy, it gets a lot of great light (especially in the morning). Crown Heights is a special place to me now. I didn’t spend much time here until I met her. It feels like home, and now I can’t imagine anything else but that.

The bed breaks almost every night, despite getting new slats and making sure none of the storage gets in the way. It looks good, though; guess you can’t expect much from Ikea bed frames. The plants look pretty on the window sill and I try to surprise her with flowers often as possible. Then the window sill looks really pretty.

I wonder when she’ll leave this place, and if the next one will be better than the last, or if I’ll miss this place dearly. I think I will either way. And then hopefully soon after that we’ll have something of our own. Somewhere where the bed doesn’t break and the flowers never die.

We laugh in there so much, just talking or dancing or watching our guilty pleasure reality shows. We like to joke that we tan in there in the mornings, because the light is so strong and beams directly on our faces. She lights up the whole room when the light lays on her face like that. I’ve never seen something so perfect.

The first time I ever went there was so special. And so was the second, and third, and so on and so forth. But something about that first time was different. It feels like the start to this chapter, a chapter I didn’t see coming but can’t imagine what life would be like if it hadn’t.

We’ve grown together a lot in this room. Starting out not knowing what would come next, to asking the scary questions, to falling in love, to falling in love even more, and laughing and crying and laying and figuring out how to navigate life together. It’s been nothing short of a dream.

I don’t know if we’d be where we are now if it weren’t for this room, so it’ll always be special to me; the place we fell in love. It’ll always be the place I feel safest and most calm. Anywhere can be like this as long as she’s with me, but there’s just something about this room.

How to Use Google Ads to Boost Awareness

There are a few things that stay top of mind for any small business owner such as, sales, marketing, and brand awareness. One of the best ways to help with these specific areas is Google Ads (aka AdWords).

Running Google Ads are great for:

  • Easily helping potential customers find your company.
  • Owning the search engine real estate when people search your company name and even the products/services you offer.
  • Testing different call-to-actions (CTAs) and messaging to see what resonates best with driving sales.

That said, here are a few key strategies you can implement to help ensure that you’re yielding positive results with your AdWords campaign to boost awareness further.

Target the Right Keywords

You’ll notice that it can be difficult to compete with broader keywords within your industry, so instead focus on geo-targeted keyword searches such as, “auto repair service in Seattle WA.”

More specifically, here are different ways you can target your keywords within AdWords:

  • Broad match is the default match type that all your keywords are assigned. Ads may show on searches that include misspellings, synonyms, related searches, and other relevant variations. So if your keyword is “women’s hats,” someone searching for “buy ladies hats” might see your ad.
  • Negative match — Excludes your ads from showing on searches with that term. So if you’re a hat company that doesn’t sell baseball hats, you could add a negative keyword, designated with a minus sign (-baseball hats).
  • Broad match modifier — Similar to broad match, except that the broad match modifier option only shows ads in searches including the words designated with a plus sign (+women’s hats) or close variations of them.
  • Phrase match — Ads may show on searches that match a phrase, or are close variations of that phrase, with additional words before or after. Ads won’t show, however, if a word is added to the middle of the phrase, or if words in the phrase are reordered in any way. Designated with quotation marks (“women’s hats“).
  • Exact match — Ads may show on searches that match the exact term or are close variations of that exact term. Close variations here may also include a reordering of words if it doesn’t change the meaning, and the addition or removal of function words (prepositions, conjunctions, articles, and other words that don’t impact the intent of a search). Designated with brackets, the keyword [women’s hats] could show when someone searches on Google for “hats for women.”

From there, make sure you group similar keywords under their own ad group. This will ensure that you’re targeting is narrowed in on and also help you understand which ad groups perform the best, in addition to the types of keywords themselves.

Build Out Targeted Landing Pages

One of the biggest mistakes you can make when running your AdWords campaign is just driving traffic to your homepage. Make sure your ad copy matches the copy on your landing page. Doing so will create a stronger connection and experience the minute someone clicks on your ad and goes to a web page to learn more about what you’re offering.

Know that optimizing the customer journey is just as important as getting the sale. In fact, it’s what’s going to help you drive the best results and over time, help with getting the most sales for the lowest cost.

Do Competitive Research

Knowing which keywords your competitors are bidding on and the type of ad copy they are running are great ways to give you additional ideas on how you can position your own campaign.

In doing your competitive analysis, you’ll also better understand how much people are paying for the keywords you want to target as well as the search volume. Take this information and leverage it with setting up your campaign as well as for monitoring it once you launch.

Lastly, a great tool to help is Spyfu.

Don’t Be Afraid to Hire an Expert

Running a business takes a lot of work and on top of that, having to learn the ins and outs of how an AdWords campaign needs to run to ensure success can feel daunting. For this exact reason, you shouldn’t be shy about hiring an expert to help you set everything up.

This person can ensure the following for you:

  • Conversion tracking is set up so you can track online and offline conversions.
  • Keyword research and optimization.
  • Connect your AdWords account with your Google Analytics account, so you have an easy place to see the performance of your ads.
  • Generate reporting to help you understand what’s working, what’s not, and where improvements are needed.

Final Thoughts

AdWords is the easiest way for any small business owner to test messaging, CTAs, and drive immediate website traffic. But the power of AdWords comes into play when you can drive actual results that go beyond just awareness, i.e., sales. Know that running a successful campaign will take some time to collect enough data to foster additional decisions on where changes need to take place. Be patient, and keep testing as much as you can.

Mercedes-Benz Collection

It’s been coming for years and it’s finally here. Actually, it landed in two cities late last Summer, early last Fall. The “Mercedes-Benz Collection“. What is it you ask? It’s a monthly subscription service that allows you to drive an entire range of Mercedes-Benz vehicles.

No, this isn’t a special lease, with Mercedes-Benz Collection, you’re no longer limited to driving one vehicle. From thrilling performance to supreme capability to refined comfort, you have access to the Mercedes-Benz lineup for one flat, monthly fee. I don’t know that you can set this up on desktops, however, you can apply/subscribe with the Mercedes-Benz Collection app. With the app, you can apply for your membership, pay the one-time activation fee, pay your first monthly payment, and request your flip(s). When you’re ready for a change, a Mercedes-Benz concierge delivers your next vehicle directly to your doorstep. How cool is that? No long-term commitment, one-time activation fee, a month-to-month membership, and cancel or pause any time.

I’m buying a Rivian, and I’ll have it next year when they begin deliveries, however, I stand firmly behind Mercedes-Benz vehicles and they will always be my “daily drivers”. At the time of writing the “Mercedes-Benz Collection” is only available in Nashville and Philadelphia and plans are to roll out to other cities.

Example pricing in Philadelphia offers one of two tiers. “Reserve” or “Premier”. With Reserve, the cost is $1595/Month Plus Tax and the choices are the E 300 Sedan, the E 400 Wagon, AMG C 43 Sedan, GLC 350 SUV, AMG GLC 43 SUV, E 400 Coupe, E 400 Cabriolet, or AMG C43 Coupe. With Premier the cost is $2995/Month Plus Tax and your choices are the AMG E 63 S Sedan, AMG C 63 S Sedan, S 560 Sedan, AMG GLE 63 S Coupe, G 550 SUV, GLS 550 SUV, AMG GLE 63 S SUV, AMG C 63 S Coupe, or SL 550 Roadster. How’s that for choices?! Mercedes-Benz even promises the vehicles offered are within the three most recent model years.

We subscribe to movies, television, mobile phones, and just about everything else, this is a logical evolution. Many are familiar with SAAS, or, Software As A Service, I would call this MAAS, Motoring As A Service. Mercedes-Benz might be one of the world’s first Motoring Managed Services Providers.

No dealerships, no cumbersome buying experience, no repairs, it’s ingenious.

“Limitations” of Data

Hi everyone 🙂 Now that my CS midterm is finally over, can finally catch some breath and post about my thoughts regarding Meaningful Indicator for this week 😛

To start things off, I shall be introducing the most interesting data set of all time. Which is nonetheless about grades — Something we all can relate to.

When I was first introduced to this data set, although the color coding seems to be sending an apparent signal. The score listed under the “Total” row tends to exhibit an unresistable force which pulls my eye towards it.

To me, a data set is similar to a car with the metrics resembling each of the car parts. With that in mind, I analyzed this data set and it seems that things aren't as obvious as they seem.

Before we consider the “limitations” of the current data set, let's consider the utility aspect first. In term of utility, the color coding seems to depict a scene for both extreme end of the spectrum. As usual, the intermediate part of the spectrum is hard to differentiate. (From QR Experience)

As for the value of differentiating, I would say red holds more value than green as it seems to show a clear direction for improvement perhaps? But what I am more excited about (or maybe not) is cleaning this particular data set by introducing new variables / collapsing current existing ones and perhaps merging some of the variables that in my perspective may not be that meaningful.

It seems that in this inquiry module, it is leveraging on what we learned in our QR module. Initially, it hones our skill of analyzing data, asking critical questions and making data visualization out of it. After which it transit to collecting data for more “foreign” topics such as meritocracy. Now it seems to be presenting the opportunity for not only data cleaning but combine both data collecting and data cleaning together to make the data set more “meaningful”.

Before I set off to clean the data with my peers, perhaps I would like to reiterate one more key takeaway from today class. When in doubt, always define first. Just like how we use Reddit as a platform to gauge public acceptance and feedback in terms of upvote and comment. I feel that in order to classify this data set into the meaningful category, perhaps it is to be aired to the class and the meaningful gauge of the data set would be based on the class acceptance of it.

Furthermore, to me the “perfect” data set is one that not only can differentiate the extreme but allow the viewer to segregate the intermediate portion clearly such as who is “better” or score “higher” points than the other, but it may be a bit hard as a variety of matric have to be weigh and factor into this “black hole” equation before this can happen.

For my next medium post, I shall be doing an analysis of the meritocracy data set which my group collected over the span of 2 weeks. (Should be done soon hopefully, trying to increase the sample size). After which, I am going to dig into the cleaning of this midterm data set. Stay tuned and all the best to those who still have midterm next week 🙂 [Including myself, of course, last paper on next Friday 🙁 ]

The ART of irresistible creating sales offers

Learn this valuable acronym to build hard-to-pass-up deals that your customers must have.

When building marketing campaigns, one of the hardest tasks is creating tempting offers. Make the wrong offer and it can erode your brand’s value. Create the right offer and people will start lining up.

After running a business and helping clients with theirs, a pattern started emerging on how to create offers quickly and I want to give it to you.

To put things into prospective, I work at Lakeside Marketing. We help transform disorganized teams into selling machines by working with management to create amazing campaigns. Campaigns bring product training, task management, customer communication, and creative arts together.

Part of creating a transformative campaign is having a solid offer. Offers are the “deal” you are educating your customer about. Sales offers are pivotal to your marketing efforts because they create action. Let’s dig in…

What’s Your Offer?

  1. Savings (Save 10%, buy a case and get 3 free, BOGO, deal club)
  2. Freshness (seasonally available)
  3. New and timely information (current events, new products, research, or clinical findings)
  4. Educational (training, support, recipes, free guides)
  5. Convenience (free shipping, “pop-up” shops)
  6. Emotional (positive affirmations, negative consequences)

Use the acronym ART when thinking about your offers:

A: Automate

Try to automate communication and simplify the customer’s journey, making it really easy to take advantage of the offer.

R: Return (on investment)

Have a positive short-term (1–2 months) return on investment for the organization while looking at how to improve total long-term sales goals through follow-up offers.

T: Time-Sensitive

Offers can expire at the end of the campaign. This creates scarcity and a reason for your customer to act.

Asking yourself, “why would my customer give a damn about my offer?” is probably a good litmus test to whether your offer is good or bad.

Let continuous learning be your guide.

Creating compelling offers takes time. You are not going to be a master from the beginning. This is because you must create a trusting relationship with your audience. This is done through the authentic stories you are telling through your campaigns.

We like to run different tests to see how the audience reacts to different subject lines and inbox preview text. This can really help hone your message. This is called A/B testing and there are plenty of tools to help test everything from emails to landing pages to Facebook and Instagram ads.

We also like to do regular meetings with the teams that we work with. This way we can get input and change direction on the fly based on conversations with sales, customers, and management. Do regular meetings! Promise, that you will need them to sort out any issues….

The ‘why’ of your offer

Asking yourself, “why would my customer give a damn about my offer?” is probably a good litmus test to whether your offer is good or bad. Asking why forces us to question our motives and behaviors surrounding the campaign we are working on. We hope that you become ARTists at crafting your next offer!

Increase your Sleep Quality!

Photo by Sam Solomon on Unsplash

Sleeping appears to be one of my biggest drawbacks in life, that is of course in terms of productivity. So, how can we sleep a shorter amount of time, with a better quality of sleep?

Arnold Schwarzenegger once said…

“Yeah sure, some people say they sleep 8 hours. For them I have only one message: Sleep faster.”

Why Sleep is Important?

Photo by Jakob Braun on Unsplash

Before we start our adventure of improving your sleep quality, let me just say that I am by no means a professional in this area. In correlation, these methods may also not work with everyone. — NerdOfCode

First off, sleeping is vital to the human race for a variety of known and unknown reasons.

According to Popular Science, studies have shown that humans that are sleep deprived, will perform at a much lower rate on standardized testing than their well-slept competitors.

Popsci also went on to note that the ability to recall information correctly, is directly affected based on your sleep.

Lastly, sleeping is a necessity for human beings. If you don’t sleep, and your constantly awake… You will eventually began to slow down, and then in effect die.

Why is Sleep Quality is Important?

According to, “good sleep” is important because:

  • “Poor sleep can make you fat”
  • “Good sleep can improve concentration and productivity”
  • “Maximize athletic performance”
  • ”Poor Sleepers Have a Greater Risk of Heart Disease and Stroke”

Yikes 😱!

How do I Improve my Sleep Quality?

Now that we all know why sleeping is important, how do we go about improving our actual sleep quality?

Well, your sleep quality deals with a number of differentiating factors; so here’s a basic list of sleep quality altering factors:

  • Noise
  • Lighting
  • Caffeine
  • Anxiety
  • Stress
  • Medications

So, to improve your sleep quality you’ll need to somehow reduce the above factors.

For example, we can reduce the amount of background noise around us as we sleep, by using noise-cancelling ear-muffs and/or ear-plugs. Using such items will effectively reduce the amount of noise you hear as you sleep, and will ultimately improve your quality of sleep.

Your sleep can be affected by so many different factors, there are too many to keep track of at once. But, an easy one to fix is the lighting in your bedroom. For the utmost sleep quality, it is important to minimize the amount of light you see during your sleep.

This can be accomplished by just turning your lights off, or using a face-mask.

It’s easy as 1–2–3, and it pays off big-time the next morning.

Everyone knows that caffeine is a drug and a stimulant, that makes us all perk up and become super sensitive. If drunk before going to sleep, it will make it hard for us to fall asleep, and will in effect lower are overall sleep quality.

So, as a general rule, don’t drink coffee past 5 P.M.

Anxiety will not let your brain go to rest very easily as it keeps you up worrying.

Anxiety is very hard to get rid of, but there are some simple routes you can take to lessen your anxiety through: medication, yoga, and meditation.

Stress is very similar to anxiety, as it is something that keeps you up stressing at night.

Stress is also pretty hard to get rid of, as it is caused by burdening situations, such as working somewhere you don’t want to work, and being behind on your student loans.

The methods of getting rid of anxiety, can also be used on stress.

Some medications can solve one problem, but create another.

For example, let’s say you’re taking stress-reducing medication, but that medication also keeps you awake at night.

The only way to solve this issue, is to get off all your medication by finding another method to get-rid of your stress.

In conclusion, in order to improve your sleep quality, all you have to do is make sure that you are following the above rules.

Have a nice night! 😴😴😴

I’m a feminist but….I think feminism could do better at acknowledging the experience and existence of single mothers.

Each week I tune in religiously to the Guilty Feminist podcast where the host, Deborah Frances White, has undoubtedly earned hero status in my eyes. DFW’s intersectional feminism is the pursuit of gender equality that includes those on the margins. Intersectionality demands a ‘no cutting corners’ approach to women’s liberation, no collateral damage excused as we fight the good fight.

Careful attention is given on this world famous podcast to challenge established privileges and throw the gates wide open for all. For example, because of The Guilty Fem I now make a conscious effort to remember that we have celebrated 100 years of some women’s right to vote, some, because the vote for black women came much later. The extra word is simple and yet so important.

A noticeable effort is put in for Guilty Feminist panels to include the voices of queer, disabled and BAME women and non-binary people. This is great. But throughout my year of tuning in weekly and working through the back catalogue, I’d yet to see any evidence of the conscious effort to include the voices and experiences of single mothers. That was until Sharmadean Reid showed up during one episode and declared with authority and poise:

“For me, supporting lone parents is a starting point for equality.”

I literally had to pull the car over and scream with excitement, she went on:

“It’s the foundation that allows other conversations to happen, like increasing the economy and productivity of a nation and improving its Gross Domestic Happiness.

Most of these lone parents are women.

For the women who choose to start a family, they cannot even begin to think about taking incremental steps in their career if they are unable to work because of the domestic and emotional labour they have to endure, unpaid.

Of course, we should be supporting families whatever they look like, but ultimately there is a difference between single (lone) parents and co-parents.”

As I heard Sharmadean Reid speak out I truly wish I could have been there to stand up and applaud. Finally someone was giving an unapologetic plea for the struggle of single parents, whilst also bringing dignity and visibility to us.

Reid’s words were read (try saying that ten times quickly) from her contribution to the book ‘Feminists Don’t Wear Pink, and other lies’ and if her opening statements have wet your appetite, her chapter is really worth getting your hands on, along with any interviews and articles Reid has written, this woman is an unstoppable force.

As DFW explained herself in a recent episode of the Guilty Feminist: living an empowered and successful life is not in itself a feminist act, the feminist act is using that success to empower others and challenge inequality.

What I love about Sharmadean Reid is not that she is an extremely successful and highly productive entrepreneur with an enviable analytical mind to boot (but that’s awesome) what I really love is how Reid has used her success and platform to address and challenge the inequality and obstacles faced by lone parents, such as campaigning for women in business by rewriting the rules on how to run a business based on part time hours. That is what makes her a feminist.

In an interview with Danielle Newnham, Reid was asked what drives her to want to make a positive difference:

“I don’t really know why I care so much, what fuels me. Maybe because I’ve seen first-hand, growing up as the eldest child of four kids to a single parent, how financial oppression works. Money and power, those are the two main ingredients to equality, and change happens incrementally. The suffragettes died for us 100 years ago and the gender pay gap is another 100 years apart. In black America, there are people alive today who have experienced segregation.

The divides are still there so if I don’t do my part (when I have the ability to) well frankly, it’s weird to me.”

It’s weird to me too Sharmadean.

I frequently wonder why single parents are not more often considered an important, marginalised voice to be amplified by intersectional feminism. I’ve dove deep into the internet trying to find where this is being discussed and each time I come back to the surface completely empty handed. Sharmadean’s words read aloud on the Guilty Feminist was the treasure I’ve been searching for. But we need more conversations like this.

We, the single mothers, are the canaries in a coalmine full of mothers, full of women. So this International Women’s Day I implore you all; employers, politicians, friends and neighbours, to consider what it means to be a single mother in 2019. As Reid said herself, this is a starting point for equality.

Ekspedisi Maritim: Gerhana Matahari Total 2016

Perjalanan memakan waktu sekitar 15 jam.
